Monmouth County’s riverside communities are well-known for their grand estates and impressive upscale homes. What many may not know is that real estate in the area also includes smaller homes and cottages that make great starter homes or secondary properties.

Cottages for sale in Rumson, Fair Haven, Little Silver and Red Bank

As the name suggests, a cottage is typically a small house built in a traditional architectural style. This description applies to cottages in the upscale communities of Rumson, Fair Haven, Little Silver, Red Bank, and others found along the Navesink and Shrewsbury Rivers.

Small, however, doesn’t necessarily mean cramped, and this is certainly true for cottages on the Rumson peninsula. A typical cottage size is around 1,000 to 1,200 square feet, sitting on lots that measure around 1/3 acre or more.

While being welcomingly cozy, these cottages also boast plenty of desirable features, including cathedral ceilings, charming porches or patios, well-equipped kitchens, and spacious living areas. The oversized lots where they sit on provide plenty of opportunities for future expansion.

Some cottages have great views and easy access to the river, making them the perfect vacation property, which you can enjoy with family and friends or rent out to the many visitors who regularly flock to the area.

Starter homes for sale in Rumson, Fair Haven, Little Silver, and Red Bank

There are plenty of options for starters homes in the riverside communities of Monmouth County. While the median home price in the area may be higher than the state or country median, there’s also a wide range of home prices and sizes to match various budgets.

Starter home options include bungalows, Colonials and ranch-style homes measuring anywhere from around 900 to 1,800 square feet, built on lots measuring about 1/3 to over 1 acre. The large lots provide plenty of room for future expansion as your family and your needs grow.

Larger homes are available at very attractive prices for buyers on a budget, but these may need some fixing and renovating. When considering this option, you need to look into the possible cost of renovation on top of the property cost.

Most starter homes in the area are found further inland without water views, but in closer proximity to the downtown areas and the amenities found there. But you will also find properties located close to the river, offering stunning views and easy access to the water.

Condos and co-ops also make great options for starting families. Condos come in a wide range of prices and sizes, measuring anywhere from 700 to over 2,000 square feet with 1 to 5 bedrooms. You get the opportunity to be part of a close-knit and desirable neighborhood while staying within your budget.

Red Bank is home to a number of condos with highly attractive prices, found in excellent locations. Little Silver also has a good inventory of condos, but with somewhat higher starting prices.

Co-ops are similar to condos except you’re buying a share in the development instead of the property. You will find co-ops in other communities in the area.
