Rumson is a historic borough in Monmouth County, NJ, located on a picturesque peninsula overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Bordered by the Navesink and Shrewsbury Rivers, it encompasses a total area of 7.117 square miles, 29% of which is water.

The borough was incorporated in 1907, but has a written history that dates back to the 1600s with the first European settlements. “Rumson” is believed to have been shortened from Navarumsunk, the name given to the peninsula by the Lenni-Lenape’ tribe who inhabited the region.

The peninsula’s natural beauty and proximity to the water made it the favorite summer destination of wealthy New Yorkers in the early 1900s.

Over the years, those summer residents have become permanent ones, many of whom commute, usually via water, to nearby lower Manhattan. Sea streak, a fast ferry service from Atlantic Highlands, is now the main commuter service connecting Rumson and Manhattan.

As part of the New York Metropolitan Area, Rumson makes an ideal community with its idyllic lifestyle serving as the perfect respite from the bustle of the city. Surrounded by water on three sides, the peninsula offers a host of outdoor activities like sailing, boating, swimming, golfing, or simply relaxing on the beach or riverside.

The borough is also home to a number of excellent shops and restaurants, and nearby Manhattan provides more world-class dining, shopping, and entertainment options.

• The Navesink River is another popular destination in Rumson, offering activities like fishing, crabbing, bird watching, canoeing, kayaking, swimming, and many more. The river also provides breathtaking views year round.
• Rumson has several parks and recreation facilities, featuring playgrounds, sports fields and courts, and venues for community events like concerts and free movies. The largest park is Meadow Ridge Park while Riverside Park is the busiest, thanks to its baseball/soccer fields. Victory Park is known for its history, expansive waterfront area, water activities, and the various events held here.
